PhD Position – Insulation gases with low global warming potential

Do you want to do applied research and help to find environmental friendly solutions to fight global warming?
Research focus of the high-voltage laboratory is the insulation of high electric field strengths in various applications with novel environmental friendly insulation media. We are a research group at D-ITET with multi-disciplinary backgrounds and are seeking to hire a Ph.D. student with a Master in chemistry or material science.

Research Position:
High-voltage applications, such as resistive plate chamber detectors in high-energy physics experiments, gas insulated substations of the electric power transmission system or particle accelerators for industrial processes use gases that are potent greenhouse gases, e.g. sulfur-hexafluoride or R134a. Environmental friendly replacement candidates need to be identified and characterized, preferably using quantum chemical tools.
The research topic of the successful candidate will be the numerical and theoretical search for novel molecules and gas mixtures for high-voltage insulation and their characterization in gas discharge processes.

Job specification:
You have graduated from a university and received an excellent degree in chemistry, material science or a related subject. You are motivated and interested in working within an interdisciplinary research group. You work systematically and independent, are well organized and can present your results.
We offer a challenging and application oriented research work in a great team with ETH salary level 5.
